With no successor on the horizon, it seemed clear that the Jeep Cherokee name would become a part of automotive history rather than a namesake of the future.
With the debut of the final Cherokee model back in 2023–a Diamond Black Jeep Cherokee Altitude Lux 4x4-- it looked like the end of the Cherokee name…
Or, so we thought.
During the 2024 Los Angeles auto show, Jeep dropped a major bombshell–the return of a new Jeep Cherokee model!
So, what do we know about this latest release? Keep reading to find out!
What We Know So Far
Nearly two years after the final Jeep Cherokee model rolled off the production line, Jeep has confirmed a successor to the iconic namesake.
At this year’s Los Angeles auto show, Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa announced the arrival of a new compact SUV with a hybrid powertrain for 2025.
While it remains to be confirmed if the new Jeep Cherokee for sale will revive the Cherokee name, Filosa did hint at the arrival of a compact crossover with a familiar name earlier this year.
Unfortunately, Jeep is keeping the details of the expected Jeep Cherokee hybrid model quiet, with no mention of technology features, exterior colors, or whether the model will be a plug-in hybrid–similar to the 4xe models–or a traditional hybrid.
While we don’t know much about what’s to come, it’s clear that Jeep will have its hands–and production line–full. With the potential 2025 Jeep Cherokee replacement, a redesigned Compass in the works, and a smaller compact crossover set to debut in 2026, we can expect some exciting new models from Jeep in the very near future!
A Revival for the Ages: A Look Back at the Jeep Cherokee’s History
The Start of Something New
The Jeep Cherokee made its debut in 1974, entering the automotive stage in the only way it knew how–in luxury and affordability.
While most of its features were based on the Wagoneer, the two-door SUV stood out for its luxurious design and price point. With adjectives like that following the name, it's no surprise that a four-door option was added to the lineup in 1977.
Risky Business
The 80s were more than iconic movie titles and colorful clothing choices–they also marked major changes for the Jeep Cherokee.
A complete reconstruction was due for the Cherokee, complete with a 7-inch shorter wheelbase, a 21-inch decrease in the length, and a 1,000-pound weight loss. What did all of these engineering changes mean? Better fuel mileage and easier handling both on and off the road.
The redesign, while risky, proved successful as the refreshed Cherokee dominated the market in 1984, eventually building its reputation as an off-road marvel.
What Goes Up…
In 1997, the Jeep Cherokee welcomed a well-deserved facelift, with a newly updated interior that saw key improvements in style and safety features.
While the Cherokee shined in the spotlight, it stepped back to welcome the Jeep Liberty. Unfortunately, the Liberty could only ride the coattails of the Cherokee’s success for so long before a return of the icon in 2013.
The return of the Cherokee proved difficult, with sales steadily falling and other models, such as the Jeep Compass, finding their own success.
As other Jeep namesakes began to take center stage, time proved to be against the Cherokee, and was discontinued in 2023.
